In the latest installment of our on-going examination of Inherent Vice and Vineland, Frankie and Geena read and tackle Thomas Pynchon's illuminating 1966 New York Times article "A Journey into the Mind of Watts"; join us as we constellate Watts, Evelle Younger, and the beginnings of Black radicalism in Los Angeles, and start answering what all of this means for Inherent Vice and Pynchon in general.Texts cited:Inherent Vice - Thomas Pynchon"A Journey Into the Mind of Watts" - Thomas Pynchon

Join Geena and Frankie for the first part in an examination of a figure long under-examined in the sphere of parapolitics: Evelle Younger. The story of a man who rose from Nebraska farmboy into the FBI, the OSS, before marrying into a California legal dynasty and roaming the halls of California power. With multiple digressions along the way examining: FBI fumbles, Imperial Japan, narcotics, reality TV, Christian Identity theology, and more!

In this second installment of our series detailing the connections between Thomas Pynchon's "California Trilogy" and the Manson Family, Frankie and Geena move away from Manson and into the Cielo Drive house, where we sort through Tom O'Neill's criss-crossing stories of Reeve Whitson, Charles Tacot, and Lt. Col. Paul Tate, and try to add more to his checkered telling of these stories. From there, we move into Paul Tate's connections to cutting-edge information technology, Curtis LeMay, John K Singlaub, and the shadowy plots of the American Security Council, and the LAPD's PDID. Join us and find out what all of this and more means in relation to Doc Sportello and Zoyd Wheeler's bad trips.

Our first episode in this examination of Pynchon's "California trilogy" focuses on Inherent Vice's myriad links to the Beach Boys and the Manson murders, with the Mafia lurking dimly in the corners. Frankie and Geena examine Pynchon's connections to the LA rock scene of the 60s, the pervasive and weird influence of surf culture, and the ways the Manson family sneak and creepy-crawl their way into the foreground of our reading of the trilogy.

Welcome to the debut of Screaming Reverberations. In our introductory episode, we discuss what the show is not, what it will be, our goals in making this thing, and the novels and themes we will explore in the immediate upcoming episodes. We also go over (hopefully) helpful advice about tackling the work of Pynchon and explain our Doc Sportello-inspired "paranoid" approach to excavating it.
